Steven Segal and Men – a never ending love affair?

…I ask myself after our latest domestic episode. Reinout took control of the remote, and started zapping. I was expecting an interesting show like CSI or Cold Case.  Instead I found myself watching a Steven Segal Movie – some Mercenary for Justice that scored 4.1 on IMDB. I should be grateful I know, it could have been Out for a Kill that got a mere 2.9. I am not a Steven Segal fan. Well technically not completely true because I recall thinking he was moderately hot in my late teens, together with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. But it was a short episode in my life and ever since Under Siege, he has been off the radar.

But my husband has miraculously brought him back to life. He now has a place of pride in our DVD collection, front row! I really don’t understand why men go for these crap movies. It’s like they have an inner antenna that scans and pick out the worst movies there are. Like Dungons & Dragons, Street Fighter and Alone in the Dark. They have not only one thing in common, but three…They are computer games, should have stayed that way and all score below 4.0 on IMDB. Quite a feat which in itself warrant some respect. But would you watch them? It’s practically the same as killing 2 hours of your precious life.

On the other hand Reinout has some serious objections to some of the films I hold in high regards. I love the independent, long, drawn out dramas, capturing the austerity and adversity of the daily life and situations we found ourselves in. I would even go to the extent in saying I prefer bad endings to good ones. The ones which keeps you awake at night, pondering on the miserable destiny the protagonist suffered. Such as Irreversible, Maria Full of Grace, Hotel Rwanda or the House of Sand and Fogs. I can vouch for them all.

But I might be in luck. A trailer for the film Tears of the Sun, just showed and it’s on TV tomorrow. With Monica Bellucci and Bruce Willis in the leads we have finally found some common ground!

It’s Steven Seagal, and I think he is a wimp.. but I love Van Damme. I grew up with some of those movies, and they become a part of you. When you read up on actors like JCVD, you notice there is a lot to respect about their careers, even if they made a lot of crappy movies and lousy decisions. Incidentally, JCVD has an autobiographical movie now that is critically acclaimed. He almost got a super deal with Universal in the nineties, but was using cocaine and thought he was worth even more than they offered him, which apparently was a great deal…financially speaking. he could have been “up” there with Stallone and Schwarzenegger. Maybe if he’d gone for the deal, you wouldn’t have omitted him in your post :P

Different from most guys I like some art house and romantic movies as well.. Like Swept from the Sea(So beautiful..!), What dreams may come, Love story, but also La vita e bella, La Sconosciuta(Tornatore :)), A night at the opera (Marx brothers) or Singing in the rain.. Erm.. oh well. :)
