Personal upgrade
There is no such feeling as when you have worked like a dog and you can finally enjoy the fruits of your labour. I’ve been cleaning since early this morning and at 10 pm I dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s. Fortunately I had Caroline to help me and she did a marvellous job. I took on my cluttered cupboards and drawers with great enthusiasm and managed to get a whole garbage bag full of clothes for the Salvation Army. Another plastic bag was destined for the second hand shop. As I was inspecting my new wardrobe feeling a great sense of achievement I couldn’t escape the sadness that I can’t actually wear any of those exquisite garments that had been hand selected to continue being part of my clothing ensemble.
I wished it would not be before long that I could squeeze myself into those dresses and skirts. In line of that perhaps it was time for an upgraded version of myself - Susanne Waldau-te Brake 2.0. That’s the fun part of being a woman, you always have a good excuse for a transformation – a new job, a lost boyfriend, a blind-date or my favourite of all time revenge! Who doesn’t like to get the opportunity to meet someone on your hit list just to show how fabulous you’ve become. Sounds shallow, true, but it does grant you an instant boost of satisfaction.
I’ve had a few of those moments myself. One that promptly springs to mind was a break-up I took particularly hard. As I couldn’t let go of the fact I had been dumped I was planning my imminent return in great detail. I didn’t call nor did I return any of my ex calls (they weren’t that many anyways). It was hard but necessary. As we were moving in the same circle of friends I planned my return for a party I knew he would also attend. It worked. A new haircut, 4 kg’s lighter and stunning dress I was set to impress. I’m still not sure whether it worked or not. He had a new girlfriend, so he became a moving target, and I think the only thing I achieved in the end was her wrath. But even that was a victory in itself, because her jealousy and his weak response made it very clear that I was better off moving on. And so I did…
