Longing for Sweden
I’m currently immersed into a book from Stieg Larsson called the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I have mentioned it here a few times before and I can really recommend it. It’s a classic cold case mystery and perfect for those cold winter days. Definitely Christmas present material for the book lover.
Typically around Christmas I read Swedish literature. It’s the only time of the year I really miss Sweden with it’s traditions, food, cold dark star studded evenings. So it’s not so strange that the feeling of homesickness is descending on me. A sure favourite around Christmas is Stockholm. The whole town lights up against a thick blanket of snow. I love walking the streets of Gamla stan (Old town) in Stockholm, with it’s narrow streets and lanes, stopping at a cafe for a coffee. The small squares often have Christmas markets and a lot of home made Christmas decoration, delicacies, and of course the obligatory glogg (mulled wine). That feeling is absolutely unbeatable.
No Stockholm visit is complete without a shopping spree on NK and Biblioteksgatan. Here any self-proclaimed fashionista will feel at home with all the international designers on display as well as as the home-grown, local versions.
There are many restaurants to choose from, but as I am traditional and don’t come to Stockholm that often I always go for the older, classical ones in Gamla Stan such as den Gyldene Freden (the Golden Peace) that have been running since 1722 or Fem Små Hus (Five Little Houses).
Well, I think it won’t be too long until I plan my next visit. In the meantime for anyone that would like to experience Sweden and any of the other Scandinavian countries, I have an offer for you in my next blog post, so be on the look out!
